The Scale of the Alps

A small sign of life can establish the scale of a mountain landscape, while a closer view reveals details that disappear from a distance. This project brings those perspectives together, connecting the broad setting of the Alps with its smaller structures and the places people inhabit.

A wooded lake with a small tree-covered island sits below scattered buildings and mountain slopes.

A narrow ribbon of water passes between curving grey rock surfaces and a dark upper pool.

A pale church tower and small buildings sit among trees beneath a large sunlit cliff and hazy mountain layers.

Dark forest and mountain slopes reflect in still water, with a tiny unidentified white floating form.

A shallow foreground pool and pale plant tufts lead toward a rocky wall and a thin distant waterfall.

A tall pointed spire rises from dense city roofs beneath a broad line of snowy mountains.

Scattered farm buildings and a larger stone structure sit among green pasture and forest beneath a craggy mountain wall.

A pale braided river curves through a gravel valley toward a glacier between steep mountain slopes.

A soft Swiss flag occupies the right foreground before waterfront buildings, two towers and distant mountains.

A shaggy horned bovine rests on a pasture above a layered mountain valley; part of another animal enters at the right edge.

Soft purple flowers fill the near foreground beneath jagged mountain peaks and a rocky ridge.

A triangular snow-covered peak rises above a continuous cloud layer under a pale warm-to-blue sky.

A dark mountain building with domes and warm windows stands above cloud, beside a sharp snowy peak and distant range.

A horned brown mountain animal stands on broken rock below folded snow and blue ice; a post and yellow strap enter at the lower right.

Warm light touches a snow-covered mountain crest above cooler blue snow and shadow.

Modern towers and lower roofs sit beneath hazy foothills and pale snow-covered peaks in warm light.

A row of colourful gabled buildings borders a river, with a mountain ridge rising behind.

A church and red-roofed buildings occupy a wooded island, with a cliff-top building and mountains across the lake.
